The Durham County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) was developed in 1994 to enhance the training and tactical response of its deputies in crisis situations. Currently the team consists of 16 tactical operators, four tactical medics, and two crisis negotiators. The SERT may be called into action to respond to critical situations anytime day or night. It is the mission of the team to preserve life and protect the citizens of Durham County.

The team can respond to a variety of situations such as narcotics operations, barricaded subjects, dignitary protection, hostage situations, high risk warrant services, detention center operations, and hazardous device operations.

To become a member of this elite team, deputies must compete for a position through a rigorous screening process to include a physical ability test, firearms proficiency test, and review board. Members are required to meet physical, firearm, and training standards throughout their service.

Some examples of the equipment used by the SERT consists of short- and long-range weapons systems, less-lethal impact munitions, gas munitions, mechanical entry devices, and ballistic shields.
